A prime example of this is the blue-green algae “Gloeocapsa Magma,” which shows up as black streaks on your roof that masquerade under the appearance of dirt and grime. The actual black and dark brown streaks of algae that you see are a shell created to protect the algae from the suns’ rays.

Your shingles were manufactured with a process to inhibit growth of organic matter. Over time the shingle's defense to nature wears out. Most shingle warranties are about ten years long for algae. Typically the northern roof exposures of your home are going to see less sunlight and, as a result, they will stay damp longer.
