Oshkosh’s Roof Soft Washing Experts

Roof soft washing is one of the best ways to help keep your roof in great condition. Unlike power washing, soft washing uses less water and it’s gentler on your roof and shingles. Regular soft washing, even just once a year, helps keep your roof free from opportunistic contaminants, including blue-green algae, moss, lichen and mildew. Get your roof of your Oshkosh area home looking great with soft washing treatment from the Property Groomers.

One of the most destructive forces on your roof is the organic matter that tries to take root. A prime example of this is the blue-green algae “Gloeocapsa Magma,” which shows up as black streaks on your roof that masquerade under the appearance of dirt and grime. The actual black and dark brown streaks of algae that you see are a shell created to protect the algae from the suns’ rays.

Your shingles were manufactured with a process to inhibit growth of organic matter. Over time the shingle's defense to nature wears out. Most shingle warranties are about ten years long for algae. Typically the northern roof exposures of your home are going to see less sunlight and, as a result, they will stay damp longer. This particular environment creates conditions conducive to algae growth. Since algae spores are airborne, whole neighborhoods, as well as many housing developments, all seem to notice this issue around the same time depending on the age of the roofs.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association lists algae as an aesthetic issue, but this is not entirely the case. Over time, Gloeocapsa Magma begins to break down the composition of the shingles by feeding off the limestone filler within the shingle. This decreases the roof's ability to reflect the always damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun. This process will expedite the overall decomposition of the shingle.

Regular Maintenance: Key to Your Roof’s Longevity

Also, a more devastating effect of unchecked algae is the development of fungi, such as lichen. Lichen benefits from the organic compounds that the algae produce during its life and death cycles. The lichen will actually take root and grow right into the shingle like a cancer. This damage is irreversible and could cause leaks over time.

The good news is there are a few basic steps you can take as a homeowner to optimize your roof's longevity. Keep it clean of organic debris, trim trees away from the roof line, and make sure the gutter system is being properly maintained. With regular, routine maintenance, you can keep your home’s roof in great health longer. We are here to help! We offer a wide range of home and yard services, including ice dam removal, light landscaping, yard care and much more. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.
